How can it be said that the animals are nearly impossible to catch when
the veterinarian's association has only been permitted access twice, under
extremely strict conditions? There was
no serious rescue effort attempted by the government. To cull animals belonging to people from
Fukushima which are afraid, not feral, is wrong. To assume that the first generation offspring
of these former pets are inherently feral is also wrong...and incorrect. Puppies taken out of the zone during the
veterinarian's association rescue mission are currently happy, healthy
pets. When they were removed from the
zone, they had the usual issues of outdoor animals mentioned in the petition
(fleas, worms, etc...) but nothing that could not be cured with simple
veterinary care. Culling as a first
resort rather than as a final difficult choice is lazy, immoral, and
inhumane. The people of Japan deserve
better from their government officials.
